 "20th century man." 2006-10-27
By An admirer of Saul (uk)
Saul Bellow has limitless intellect, although he would deny he is an intellectual. To him, intellectuals get bogged down in the cul de sac of ideologies;attempting to sort out societies problems and the meaning of life via philosophies infected by the mood of the times;philosohies that ignore mans endless desires of individualism, curiosity and the need to be free.Ideologies that just add further to the mess. Bellow looks for what is human through art and literature, which is a refuge for our soul. All of this beams through Bellows essays. He transcends mere intellectualism and operates on a higher plain. He has no desire to 'do the good thing' or appear 'liberal' if it means having to lie to achieve it.His clash with Gunter Grass-who unbeknown to Bellow and the World at the time had a rather nasty skeleton in his closet-comes to mind. Grass in his politics and self righteous ranting is given the moral high ground by using deception-by doing the right thing;appearing liberal. But as people like Richard Wright found of the 'liberal' North, the attitude was all hot air.The blacks were no more accepted there than the South. They were 'accepted' as long as they stuck to the black belt areas. That truth would have destroyed many a liberal;many a do gooder,as it was a reality they knew of but hid from view.Bellow lives in this area of revelation.

His recollections of Roosevelt, the war,Yom Kippur,Paris....all wonderful. This is a wonderful insight into the greatest mind of the 20th century.

 "A vitality of ideas" 2005-01-10
By Shalom Freedman (Jerusalem,Israel)
Everything that Bellow writes has vitality. His fictional works are energized by ideas. His faith in literature and his devotion to his craft are unquestioning and are much evidenced in these essays. So are his great learning and committment to the world and life of the mind. I have always had trouble however understanding where Bellow 's overall view of the world really centers. My guess it is in the devotion to the writing life and not in any formal system of philosophical or religious thought, though I know he has been in some way connected with Rudolf Steiner's thought. In any case there is a richness of mind at work much insight in this work.

It All Adds Up, a collection of essays, written with Saul Bellow's great human insight, literary qualities and dry wit. Of course for everybody whom have read Herzog, Humboldt's Gift, The Adventures of Augie March and Henderson the Rain King should just run and get hold of a copy of this book, but honestly: anyone enjoying quality literature and are curious on life, art, politics and about how one of America's greatest authors share of his reflections and anecdotes, will probably enjoy this book. The only collection of essays I can think of, that come near this, is Hermann Hesse's My Belief. It is just such a pleasure to know, that in addition to Bellow's novels, there exist a book like It All Adds Up.

"Open Up To Abundance on All Levels" 2005-02-24
By Jennifer Shepherd (PA)
Catherine Kasper is a Wisconsin-based intuitive, teacher, and author whose new book is Angelic Abundance Treasure Maps: Discover the Wealth Within You. Angelic Abundance provides readers with powerful and practical methods for creating personal "Treasure Maps." A Treasure Map helps you to understand what energies you are bringing to a certain area of your life so that you can unblock anything that has become a barrier to good energy flow.

Catherine's book is amazing and heart-warming, and I've already found myself experiencing some surprising breakthroughs as I've begun working with her Treasure Maps exercises.

You know how some people will be blocked in one area of their life, but not the other? They may be open to receiving financial abundance, yet their personal relationships are terrible. Or they will find that the relationship stuff is easy for them, and it's money that is the challenge. Angelic Abundance Treasure Maps helps you to see how it's all about energy flow and shows you how you can consciously work on freeing up energy that has become blocked or unbalanced. You'll learn how to be more open to receiving abundance in all areas of your life, and you'll also be guided through some simple, fun exercises that you can put into practice every day to help you start noticing how abundance is manifesting in your life.

Catherine has a background as an arts teacher, so her exercises are fun, creative, and intuitive. You don't need to absorb a lot of complex metaphysical "theory" or bang your head against complex jargon or inscrutable concepts. Her writing is accessible, upbeat, and carries the vibration of the angelic helpers who have been with her throughout her life - angels who are also, as Catherine teaches her readers, active in YOUR life.

Angelic Abundance Treasure Maps will definitely give you a lift if you are interested in connecting with your angels and learning how to step into your power, spiritually and materially.

I highly recommend it!

Angelic Abundance: Treasure Maps is lots of fun and teaches us so much about communicating with our angels. Catherine Kasper presents many ideas about having fun with the angels that each one of us has with us at all times. The angels are there, so use them! The book is de-light-full and makes a very special gift.

I have always been an all around happy person, but it always seemed that something was missing. A friend gave me this book and told me that she loved it and that I just had to read it. I did. "TREASURE MAPS: DISCOVER THE WEALTH WITHIN YOU" CHANGED MY LIFE!
You may already have a "perfect" life or maybe you really do feel that you need to make some changes, Catherine Kasper (author) has some fabulous points.
I suggest that you BUY THIS BOOK!

"A Great "Feel Good" Book Loaded with Angel Info" 2003-11-27
By (United States)
In Angelic Abundance-Treasure Maps: Discover the Wealth Within You, author Catherine M. Kasper presents a guide book for redrawing the map of your life. It helps you to choose what you want and to get it through tapping into your Guardian Angel's loving guidance to reveal the true desires of you own heart. This book will benefit anyone who loves and believes in Angels.

"I wish I had this book after I'd divorced and my life was in turmoil," Kasper says. "I felt worthless; thrown away in favor of the woman, I later discovered, my husband had been seeing for years and fighting the haunting thought that I was not worth much if I could be so easily replaced. I wrote it to facilitate my own healing, certainly, but also in the hope that others would also be enabled to make their world right again. I wanted them to be able to find the great wealth that lies within their very hearts whenever they feel a need to restructure life, make it all work and feel good about being the person they are once more."

In this book, Kasper and the Angel take you on a journey through the calendar year to discover the authentic wealth of your body, mind and soul; dividing the information for each week into three sections; The Angel Reveals the Map, Search for Treasure, and Discover the Treasure. Over 400 original, simple yet highly effective activities are presented as tools to use to reveal your inner wealth and innate ability to communicate with your Angel. Although the activities are optional, completing them will create a Treasure Map Journal illustrating both where you are now and where you decide you want to be in the future.

The text is liberally sprinkled with quotes from the Angels. "We are simply here, at your side, forever your loves. We are the ones who are passionately in love with you." and "You are a marvel created from love and in you, love dwells," are two comforting and enlightening examples.

An educator with over 25 years of classroom experience, Kasper's writing is clear and easy to follow. Able to see and hear her Angels as beings of light since birth, she skillfully communicates their love and commitment. She illuminates the fact that Angelic communication is highly comforting and can easily become a normal part of anyone's daily life. Her holistic approach speaks through the use of rich imagery, concrete examples and easy to do activities.

This book will greatly assist anyone wishing to realize his or her inner wealth and rediscover how immensely they are valued and loved. It will help you look within and empower yourself to choose the path that takes you into the life you desire.

Maggie Sweet has always done what her mama and her grandmother told her to do and then she continues that pattern by doing what her family approves of and marrys her science teacher staying in a loveless and mentally abusive marriage for 20 years. The story is also a story about finding a long lost love, as well as, finding yourself. Great southern atmosphere and lots of local North Carolina flavor. Don't miss it!

Judith Minthorn Stacy, the author of "Maggie Sweet", lives in my hometown of Mooresville, North Carolina. How thrilled I was to find "Maggie Sweet" at the library in Myrtle Beach, S.C. I read the book from cover to cover in one sitting and have told so many friends about it. You have to be from the South to really appreciate the dialect of Ms. Stacy. I could not find

"Betty Sweet tells all" anywhere. I ordered from "BordeeBooks" and it was just as wonderful as "Maggie Sweet". I cannot wait until Ms. Stacy writes another book, she is a wonderful author.

By S. Lee (Birmingham, AL)
The book is short and "sweet" but definitely a fun read. While "Maggie Sweet" will never be confused with Southern literature such as Faulkner, or even Lee Smith, Stacy does an excellent job with making us laugh and earning our sympathy by the third chapter. Fans of Fannie Flagg and Adriana Trigiani will love this book. Maggie is a "desperate housewife" of a sort, and her struggle to have her childhood dreams is what propels this story along. With the obvious cliches scattered through the whole book, this is forgivable and you won't be disappointed. The characters are like those in your own community. If this book is intended to be the first of a series, it is a striking and stirring beginning. Funny, memorable, and unpretentious.

I couldn't put this book down once I began reading it. It was such a fun read! Maggie Sweet is a great wife, mother, daughter, etc. and had thought that she was happy doing all of the things that "good 'ole Maggie Sweet" should do. (A description she overhears her husband tell one of his historian society friends.) Her 20th high school reunion is coming up and she begins to question her life as she is living it. Will she ever get to realize her life long dream of becoming a hair stylist? Or, will she continue to live the life her husband expects her to live? The characters that Ms. Stacy has created in this book are delightful! I can't wait to read her next book!

I absolutely loved this book! Maggie Sweet sure stood up for herself and took charge in the end! I just can't believe that she stayed with that awful husband of hers as long as she did.

This is the story of Maggie Sweet...a woman in a crappy marriage to a man years older than her (he was one of her teachers in high school), who finally gets to the point that she's had enough. Especially when the high school love of her life, Jerry, returns home after his divorce with his wife.

Will Jerry and Maggie live happily ever after? Will the kids ever forgive her for her final decision? And will Maggie finally get to have a successful career doing hair?...I'm not sure, but I'm really hoping the next book gives us a look into the new life Maggie has planned for herself.

I definitely recommend this as a great southern read. There's tons of gossip, drama, and sweet tea! I'm gonna read the next installment the second I get my hands on a copy!

This informative volume presents the first comprehensive review of research and theory on dual-process models of social information processing. These models distinguish between qualitatively different modes of information processing in making decisions and solving problems (e.g., associative versus rule-based, controlled versus uncontrolled, and affective versus cognitive modes).

Leading contributors review the basic assumptions of these approaches and review the ways they have been applied and tested in such areas as attitudes, stereotyping, person perception, memory, and judgment. Also examined are the relationships between different sets of processing modes, the factors that determine their utilization, and how they work in combination to affect responses to social information.

Presidential Campaigns

Presidential Campaigns, an enlightening and endlessly entertaining history of American presidential elections, brings each campaign, from Washington to Reagan, vividly to life. Boller chronicles the frenzy and frolic spawned by campaigns--the songs, slogans, rallies, leaflets, parades, and hyperbolic oratory--and also gives an account of the serious side of elections--the great public debates on race relations, economic policy and the candidates' stands on the vital issues of the day.
Above all, Boller makes clear that, despite their shortcomings, presidential campaigns are an inseparable part of democratic politics in the United States. These quadrennial showdowns have alternately perplexed, pleased and fascinated the American people, teaching us much about the character of our nation.

 "Readable, Informative and Fun" 2008-05-31
By K.A.Goldberg (Chicago)
This is a readable and informative history of Presidential politics. Devoting one chapter to each election since 1789 (George Washington), author Paul Boller provides a crisp overview, followed by a host of trivial facts and tidbits. Readers get a good view of U.S. poltiical history, personalities like Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, William Jennings Bryan, etc., and key issues such as slavery, railroads, robber barons, war, peace, communism, etc. Some readers may be surprised to learn that half-truths and mud-slinging are nothing new - Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were both accused of being enemy spies, Grover Cleveland's illegitimate son was campaign fodder, and charges that the Pope would soon rule the USA came with candidacies of Catholics Al Smith (1928) and John F. Kennedy (1960).

I gave just four stars due to a couple factual errors (e.g., Martin Luther King was killed April 4, not April 27 1968), and readers may prefer the updated version - this one finishes with 1984. Still, this is fun, informative reading.

 "Objective and Informative" 2002-01-23
By William Hare (Seattle, Washington)
Paul F. Boller Jr. turned in a milestone effort with "Presidential Campaigns," combining an excellently developed historian's eye along with an objective presentation.
This informative work reads like an entertaining novel while providing all kinds of fascinating information about America's presidential campaigns from Washington to the present, from which we can learn so much about our nation's history, using famous elections as an evolutionary guide to understanding the peaks and valleys of the Ameican experience.

In that some of the subject matter is about heavy topics such as war and peace, domestic political conflict, and America during economic panics and depressions, Boller's humor is needed to lighten the heaviness and he delivers superbly. This is understandable since much of his career as an author involves books of anecdotes regarding American and British history as well as Hollywood's film world.

This is a book that crisply and entertainingly tells us so much about America, as revealed through its presidential compaigns.

"Mugwumps, Bull-Mooses, Fala and Others Who Made History" 2001-09-06
By Matherson (New York)
This classic chronicle of Presidential campaigns, from the get-go to contemporary times, has the unusual virtue of being useful either as a collection of short readable chapters - each just the right size for a daily bus or train ride - or as a reference source. Reading this in the wake of Monicagate and the Florida Recount, it's instructive to read the history of Grover Cleveland, who seems to have features of BOTH past Democratic candidates. Like Clinton, he had his scandals - fathering an illegitimate child. Like Gore, his career was rudely interrupted by an election which he won on popular votes but lost, in a hotly contested, knife-edge electoral college tally.

This is a well organized book full of useful facts that show how our political history has evolved over the years. Full of antdotes and trivia, the book reveals quite a bit about America. Very well condenced stories of each election. Reports things as historical facts rather than a political leaning (except for the 1988 race maybe). Overall a very good read.
