Fire up the flat iron and break out the bullet-proof blow drier, because Marla Shore--the sassy, South Florida beauty salon owner with a knack for fixing hair and finding trouble--is back...

Beauty shows are not usually known for cold-blooded murder, but that's exactly the case when Luxor Products company director Christine Parks is found dead in her hotel room--facedown in a foot bath. Suspect number one is Marla's college roommate, Georgia Rogers, who got Marla the job working behind the scenes at the beauty show.

It doesn't take long into Marla's investigation to discover that everyone who worked with Christine had a reason to hate her. From serial cheating to indulging in blackmail, threats, lawsuits, bad investment advice and worse, she was a walking Bad Hair Day, and the list of possible suspects is longer than a pop diva's hair extensions. And when a model with top-secret information for Marla turns up dead at the Russian baths, things go from bad to worse in a hurry. Behind the thumping house music and dazzling, high-platform hair tricks of Florida's hottest beauty show, something very ugly is going down, something that goes beyond polish and style to the dark heart of corruption, greed, and killer-takes-all ambition of the beauty biz. If Marla isn't careful, she just may end up on the wrong end of a murderer's very skilled hands...

 "Beyond The Big Hair" 2007-02-23
By Liz at reviewedbyliz.com (Cedar Springs, Michigan, USA)
I am a sucker for trade shows. When people involved in any industry or business gather to discuss their products and work you can learn the most interesting things. In Perish by Pedicure, a murder takes place during a beauty show in which salon owner Marla Shore is participating and Cohen gives us a glimpse behind the big hair of the professional beauty world that is both enlightening and entertaining.

Heroine Marla Shore has agreed to help out at a beauty industry trade show in nearby Fort Lauderdale in exchange for some publicity for her own salon. She is desperately trying to juggle her show responsibilities, her salon commitments, her renewed friendship with an old college roommate, and her widowed fiancé's former in-laws, who are now staying with her and whom she seems unable to please. And then there is a murder. Marla's college roommate (also a houseguest) appears to have been the last person to see the victim alive and is the number one suspect.

While your first inclination might be to dismiss a book with the word pedicure in the title, Cohen has created a good book and series. The setting is interesting, the plot is good and well thought out, and Marla Shore is a character with depth. We learn more about her in this book as her hostile houseguests question her ability to be a good step-mother to their granddaughter due to her involvement with criminals, her professional life, and her Jewish religion and its possible impact on the child's Christian upbringing. This book has some real meat mixed in amongst the lighter moments.

Favorite character? Goat, Marla's neighbor. Did I guess it? No. Will I read another? Yes.

"Death at a salon conference" 2007-02-03
By Dawn Dowdle (Lynchburg, VA USA)
As if Marla Shore wasn't busy enough, now she's working for Luxor Products as a styling assistant at a local conference and her fiancé's parents of his dead wife are staying at her house to see whether she'll be a good step mom for Brianna. And her friend Georgia, who helped her get the job with Luxor, will be staying with her through the weekend conference.

She hopes her work with Luxor will bring her salon more business, especially after she moves to her new location. She's also hoping to gain more experience and possibly travel with them in the future to other conferences.

Luxor director Christine Parks isn't well-liked. This is quickly evident to Marla as she gets to know the staff while setting up for the conference. When Christine ends up dead from poison, Marla begins to suspect everyone and works at trying to uncover the truth. Unfortunately there is another death. Can Marla discover the identity of the killer without putting herself and others in danger? Can she get through this week with Dalton's ex-in-laws in her house?

I really enjoy this series. Marla is such a fun character. She just can't keep herself from sleuthing. Dalton isn't the investigator in this mystery, but he still provides some needed data for Marla to unravel the mystery. I also like the Florida setting.

The author has done a great job of creating the characters and plotting the story. And there are plenty of red herrings and twists so that you aren't sure until the killer is revealed who did it. I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

 "entertaining murder mystery" 2006-12-09
By Harriet Klausner
Hair salon owner and stylist Marla Shore is not having an easy week. Her fiancé's in-laws from his dead wife are coming to town to stay in her home to check her out and insure she is right for being the stepmother of their granddaughter Brianna. She is also working for Luxor Products as an assistant hair stylist t at the Supreme Shows Conference. Marla hopes to gain experience, a better job, and an avenue to visit places she dreams of seeing.

When Marla arrives at the convention center, she meets Luxor director Christine Parker, but notices that all of the employees seem openly to despise the head honcho. When an anonymous person sends Christine a drink, she takes some and soon feels ill. The next day she is dead, a victim of poison. Marla turns sleuth, but fails to uncover the culprit before another homicide occurs.

Nancy J. Cohen has written a cleverly constructed and entertaining murder mystery starring a likable heroine who knows better, but cannot stop herself from sleuthing. In this case, the victim is so vile that a horde seems to have wanted her dead making motivation difficult to use as a means of weeding out the killer. PERISH BY PEDICURE is filled with hair splitting humor, unexpected nail biting twists, and a bad hair week caused by future in-laws while Marla cuts to the roots of the case.

 "Very readable account" 2009-09-23
By Jon Nelson (Ohio, USA)
Although I found a few of the anecdotes suspect, such as the author's account of various shenanigans that took place while she was at home in LA and Fleetwood Mac was on tour in New Zealand, for example, overall this is an entertaining warts-and-all account of what life in Fleetwood Mac was like. She does include a number of interesting stories that Mick Fleetwood left out of his autobiography, such as Lindsey Buckingham's drug use during the AMA awards and subsequent encounter with Dick Clark, and more information about the recording of Mirage. Admittedly, Stevie Nicks and even Christine McVie don't come off too well, but that's due to their own bahavior and honestly, besides the incredible amount of cocaine use, nobody really did anything that badly. If you're a fan of the band, this book is definitely worth reading.

I really enjoyed this book, I actually lost sleep at nights trying to get to the end. I felt she was careful in her wording and not trying to hurt any of the members of the group. Also, as well as giving insight into Fleetwood Mac, I got a renewed appreciation for Tusk.

This is a good book for both Fleetwood Mac fans and those who like to read about the rock 'n roll world.

As a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, I have long viewed Lindsey Buckingham as a musical wizard, just as Miss Harris has confirmed. I was, however, shocked at the violent nature of Buckingham. I wonder if he ever responded to the author's allegations after the book was released.

Two big questions remain unanswered for me at the conclusion of this book:

1. Miss Harris never asked Buckingham to explain his verbal and physical transgressions toward her, especially his reaction to her pregnancy complications, even after their relationship had turned south. Why not?

2. This may be a nit, but as a Fleetwood Mac fan in its prime, I wonder why Miss Harris did not write about Stevie Nicks' throat problems following the Rumours tour. My recollection was the decline in Stevie's vocal health caused major friction within the band prior to and during the recording of Tusk. Seems like the context was in place to include this discussion. Why was there no mention of it?

Overall, I liked this book and learned many new facts along the way. Thank you, Miss Harris.

"Interesting story, very poor writing" 2009-06-30
By maria dante (boston ma)
I have a perverse love of trashy rock bios, so naturally I was going to read this, especially since FM was the only band (and the only famous people, actually) I ever met in real life. I waited on them at the Cheshire Inn after their St Louis concert during the Rumours tour. They were all really beautiful and glowy, to my 20 year-old self, and quite polite to the help. Well, I digress. This book needed a ghost writer rather badly. The grammatical errors (which can often be overlooked in the interest of sounding cool and colloquial) were annoying, but the worst thing was the way the dialogue was written. No one, much less high-fliers like these, would ever talk the way Harris makes these people talk. And her own imagined/remembered dialogue is even worse. She sounds like a gushy 14 year-old. I have no problem with her portrayal of Nicks--she actually seems to admire her a lot, and is in awe of her talent and beauty. About Lindsey--domestic abuse is such a huge, culturally overdetermined issue that it's hard to say anything about that part of the story. It's terrible, regrettable, shameful, etc. I do think that Harris herself comes off rather badly, however--after eight years, she seemed painfully clueless, and not that bright.

But anyway, it was fun to read, if you like that sort of thing, which I unashamedly do! Recommended for airplanes, hotel rooms when there's nothing on pay-per-view, and lazy beach afternoons.

 "Ingenious Author" 2008-06-06
By Omekula Austin (Greenville, SC)
In respect to the anniversary of the Rodney King beating, the killing of Sean Bell, the recent beating by Philadelphia policemen, the killing of a 90+ year old woman in Atlanta by a policeman, and the current beating of an innocent black man by Long Island policemen...are all evidence that even though THE SITUATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA is a fictitious story, it's also veritable in many aspects.

When reading this novel, you become a character yourself. Either you find yourself portraying one of the characters that are already depicted in the novel; or, you find yourself modifying the novel to include yourself as a character and taking action against THE SITUATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

As for the author, from his bio, you learn that he has had many jobs in his 30+ years; however, there is still a greater plan for him. The way he has written this novel lets us know that a FUTURE POLITICIAN is within him. Also, the sermons that Reverand James preached in the novel lets us know that a future MAN OF THE CLOTH is within him. Also, last but not least, the verbiage and history lets us know that Michael Harriot will continue to write prominent novels and that a PROFESSOR is within him.

I encourage you to read THE SITUATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA and it would make a great FATHER'S DAY GIFT!!!

I usually don't read many fiction novels, but I like a good story. This is a GREAT story. Well written and it hooks you from the first chapter. Not only does the book entertain you, but there are excerpts from the book that deal with actual history.

People from all different faiths will appreciate some of the religious undertones, as well as other GROUPS of people.

I finished the book in two days. I would love to see this novel turn into a movie. It could be on the success level with A Time to Kill, but matching this new millenium story.

Ahmad James - Played by Chris Brown or Lance Gross

Montressor Solomon - Played by Columbus Short

Napoleon James - Louis Gosset Jr.

Officer Coble - Josh Duhamel

 "A Must Read!" 2008-05-02
By D. Pringle (Atlanta, Georgia)
Michael Harriot is a fluent, socially observant writer whose sentences move with intelligence and wit. He compassionately renders unyielding prose that illustrates the veracity of racial iniquity, political corruption, and cultural disparity. The Situation in South Carolina articulates how the most powerful organization in society is deeply rooted in legalized discrimination and entangles its victims into a web of deceit.

For much of American history corrupt police have infringed upon the liberties of oppressed citizens. Always at the mercy of a criminal justice system that unapologetically preferred not to protect them, these citizens remained socially insignificant. When police brutalities lead to the death of a well respected resident, the community decided to take action. They demanded authentic justice. They denounced the authority of the police and refused to allow them into their territory.

The Situation in South Carolina serves as a vehicle that reviles the virulence of racism, retaliation, and redemption. Harriot deftly conveys history with an artistry to capture attention and conjure conversation. He initiates universal dialogue that merits debate from historical scholars to coffee house conversationalists. Harriot should be celebrated for his courage to broach the immensely important, often neglected topic. A spectacular debut, by far!

The Situation in South Carolina is an great introduction to novelist Michael Harriot. The reader is given a glimpse into Heartstown South Carolina, a town both unique and familiar. The uneasy and sometimes volatile relationship between the African American community and Law enforcement provides the undercurrent for this skillfully, often poetically told story of anguish, revenge, and finally, the hope of redemption. I look forward to more from this author.

Because of the subject matter, I thought that this book would be dull. On the outside, it seems to be about "getting a man." But the primary theme of this paperback is the importance of friends. As the four friends struggle in their efforts to find "a good man", they find that their girlfriends are always there, no matter what. They help each other through life's changes and challenges. This story is funny in parts and entertaining overall. The characters are realistic enough that the reader actually cares what happens to them. Enjoy this book, just for fun.

I liked Terry McMillan's "The Interruption of Everything", so I was really looking forward to reading this book- but it was one of the worst, most frustrating books I've ever read. First of all, the writing is on about a sixth-grade level. Example: "...Charles asked me if I wanted to dance. I said yes. So we danced. He danced like a man who was sure of himself. He watched me. I watched him. He smiled at me. I smiled at him." That's when I rolled my eyes and gave up. Unfortunately it was on page 365!! From then on I scanned the rest of the pages, just to satisfy my curiosity about what would happen to the rest of these characters.

Secondly, most of the characters are complete morons, except for Gloria, who seemed real to me. (Working mom, single, trying to do the best for her son...) The other three jump into bed with EVERY man they meet, usually within the first three hours of meeting him. Then they whine and moan about how there are no good men out there. Well, DUH!!! Perhaps this is the point of the book, self-fufilling prophecy.

I do like the title. It describes that feeling of waiting while what you want (husband, job, baby, etc.) hasn't happened yet. But this book was a disappointing waste of time.

When Waiting to Exhale was published, it was a book we needed. Tired of depictions of slavery, Jim Crow, and ghetto life, we wanted stories dealing with our newly found affluence. McMillan gave us a buddy novel that showed us in a different light.

Attempting to read this book now is painful. The story is still interesting but the execution is amateurish.

"4 Black Women Looking for a Mate" 2009-05-13
By Bonnie Brody (Fairbanks, Alaska)
This book is a page-turner of varied quality, not consistent in emotive or story line content.

It deals with the lives of four black women in Arizona. All are single and looking for a man.

The dialogue is stilted and the characters portrayed, at times, in a shallow and almost stereotypical manner. However, despite the novel's weaknesses, I could not help but care for the characters.

 "Who Remembers REAL ROXANNE?" 2009-01-11
By Crysette Manning (White Plains, NY)
This book was really better than the movie version.

I was raised on watching that movie with my mother

and I was surprised how different the movie "Waiting to

Exhale" is from the movie.

There's another book I also just got done reading by

Jackie Christian called "Love Is the Drug" and the lead

character is REAL ROXANNE. She's a black girl and a movie

critic named after the famous rapper and that book is FIRE!

I loved reading that this weekend too.

"To Have a Man or Not Have a Man, That Is the Question" 2007-11-20
By Sandra Brazier (Beautiful New Hampshire, USA)
Because of the subject matter, I thought that this book would be dull. On the outside, it seems to be about "getting a man." But the primary theme of this paperback is the importance of friends. As the four friends struggle in their efforts to find "a good man", they find that their girlfriends are always there, no matter what. They help each other through life's changes and challenges. This story is funny in parts and entertaining overall. The characters are realistic enough that the reader actually cares what happens to them. Enjoy this book, just for fun.

 "LAME-0" 2006-08-29
By JKE (Milford, NH United States)
