Her acclaimed debut, The Song Reader, won her praise as a "brilliant new literary talent" (The Albuquerque Tribune). Now, Lisa Tucker returns with a starkly lyrical novel of page-turning intensity and rare emotional power.

Patty Taylor can handle anything. So what if the guys in her band dismiss her as just a pretty face, hired by their manager to make them more popular? She's already survived a bad childhood, a destructive teenage relationship, homelessness, and working twelve-hour shifts washing dishes. Traveling with the band gives her a way to provide for Willie, the two-year-old son she adores.

But on a hot summer day in Kentucky, when Willie's father shows up outside her hotel room, newly paroled from prison and intent on having her and his son back, Patty begins a journey that will change her from a girl who can put up with anything to a woman with a voice that can bring the house down. Shout Down the Moon is about following dreams and overcoming obstacles, about finding your voice and becoming the hero of your own life. In Patty Taylor, Lisa Tucker has created an unlikely heroine, a gutsy girl with a wry sense of humor, whose life will depend on having the courage to trust in her big talent and even bigger heart.

 "Sad" 2009-08-12
By L. Phipps (CA)
I think Lisa Tucker did a great job with the book and made it very easy to read. It took a troubled girl with a bad upbringing to come to terms what really matters in life, her child. I guess it was just the seedy lifestyle she lived as well as her Ex-Husband that I did not love. The book is well written and will keep you reading it just wasn't one of my favorites.

Shout at the Moon was a nice, easy read. It had just enough to keep me reading to the end.

The ending was too much over the top drama.

The book wasn't horrible, but not one I would recommend.

 "Worth Shouting About" 2007-01-23
By D. West (Boise, Idaho United States)
Lisa Tucker is a new voice but one that I will read again and again. For, indeed, she has found her voice and its in writing novels with emotionally charged dysfunctional families who are so well drawn that you might even know them. There is great depth in all of the characters, even the minor ones. The plot is a new and refreshing twist and allows those who may have grown up in a "normal" family to feel what it's like not to have had the support of people who loved you unconditionally.

Yes, Patty Taylor, the protagonist, can handle anything and she handles quite a bit in this novel. The reader will root for her because she has overcome so much, and she doesn't even know her own strength until her small son, Willie, is threatened. That's what makes Patty so likable, she's genuine and she doesn't always believe in herself because in the past no one believed in her. She's had to make her own way in the world. Something most of us can't relate to but can feel it through the pages of this novel.

But watch Patty pull out all the stops to bring this well written novel to its climatic ending. Starting with a Mother who psychologically abused her she goes with a man who emotionally and eventually physically abused her. But, Patty doesn't need our sympathy, she can handle herself and having a child to look after really brings Patty to the point where she achieves her greatest goals--a stable loving life. Because she grew up in a dysfunctional environment, she mistook Rick's attention and control for love. Easy to see how this could happen. But as Patty matures, she continues to put up with band members who seem to hate her (because it supplies a means to feed and clothe her son). She also begins to blossom into a woman who speaks her mind and finds someone whom she can relate to and who treats her well. Although Patty started on the fringes of society as we normally define it, she ultimately redefines what "stable" is for her. Based on what she's had to put up with in life, I can only say, she's an exemplary human being--one who I would like to have as a friend. Can't wait to read another Lisa Tucker novel.

 "Talented author" 2006-02-16
By Erin Brooks (London)
"Talented author Lisa Tucker brings the story of Patty, a single mother raising a young child on the road. After her first love and father of her child was sent away to prison, Patty tries to rebuild her life working as a singer in a band, and raise her young son. Tucker's words are true, spot on and never patronizing as she takes us through Patty's struggles with her alcoholic mother, difficult band members, possessive ex-lover while trying to build a life for herself. Patty comes across as a true and honest heroine, who tries hard to be and do the best she can while struggling with doubts, feelings and responsibilities.

I highly recommend this book."

 "A must have" 2008-09-03

 "Excellent for most Photographers" 2006-02-13
By Brianna & Dave (Midwestern U.S.)
We own a full-service photography studio in the Midwest. Each holiday season, we give ourselves a book or books on photography. This year, we decided to get two books by the same author(s): Total Digital Photography and Digital Sports Photography. We bought these after reading the reviews and looking at them at a local bookstore.

We converted from film to digital about three years ago, and workflow has been an issue for us as we've expanded and grown our studio, and dealt with all the factors involved with adding computers, archiving, etc. We do commercial, sports, and portrait photography so these books were right in-line with what we were doing.

Normally we have not written reviews on books in the past, but we felt it only fair to give these books a synopsis that we think more accurately matches the audience for which they are intended - and not all the reviews do that.

Reading the other reviews of these books, most of the complaints seemed nit-picky and not very substantial, and the overall impression was positive. A few of the technical points are well-taken, but seem a bit out of proportion to the overall spirit and gist of the books - which aren't intended to be deep technical works. We've used the books now for a bit more than a month, and we've found them both to be, for the most part, technically accurate, well-written, and very helpful for our work.

A few of the reviewers questioned the authors' use of fencing images, but we found these to be an interesting way to take an unusual and interesting subject, describe personal experience, and apply it to a variety of sports. And the images of all types were well done - good examples, well-composed, and applicable to a variety of photographers. We liked the use of a wide variety of sports photogrpahers' images in the sports book.

We must point out that these books aren't meant to be coffee-table books. One reviewer said many images are like snapshots. We disagree - they are like standard, everyday professional shots we might take, and aren't meant to be "haute" art photos. A few are of this caliber, but it's clear the authors' are attempting to reach ordinary photography enthusiasts and working professionals, not gallery artists.

One of the things we liked most was how personal and readable the books are - way more than just a reference where you'd read a snippet or two from various pages. These books have helped us understand digital photography much more deeply, and put into place a workflow and method for managing our studio more efficiently and profitably. We recommend the book to anyone seriously interested in photography as a regular pursuit-whether you're in it for the money or just as an active pursuit.

 "Nothing revolutionary, unimaginative photos" 2006-02-08
By Charlie L. (Seattle, WA)
Trying to find a good book on digital workflow, I read the other reviews posted here. After reading the book, I tend to agree with the one reviewer that says the best picture is the cover. If several shots of fencers in action shot under existing light is your cup of tea, then this is your book. When explaining the rule of thirds, the author's sample grid is skewed so far right that that it's almost the rule of halves. The author spends an inordinate amount of time covering fencing, definitely a difficult sport to shoot given the speed and constraints, but too much of the book is dedicated to this subject making it seem too one-dimensional. Most of the other shots are uninspired shots, many of which seem vacation snapshot quality.

As for the text, more time should be spent on the post capture portion. While the author goes into monitor profiles, archival and printing, not enough time is spent on these steps which are just as important to final printing as the image capture itself. Rather than trying to be generic with the type of camera, the author overly uses his example of Canon 10D which dates the text immediately. The steps outlined are useful enough until the next generation software becomes available, don't date yourself immediately by mentioning cameras that become obsolete immediately after publication. The author misses one key point in editing: Never edit the original! Always make a copy since you can never go back to what the original shot looked like. This is especially critical with JPEG since every save of the file causes further loss of data with compression.

 "Comprehensive and Readable" 2005-10-23
By J. Krstenansky (Loma Linda, CA)
I was looking for a book to better understand how to maintain an effective workflow from start to finish without wasting time at each stage. Key for me was getting a better understanding what was necessary at each stage (procedures and tools to accomplish them) vs. what was optional or simply unnecessary. This book did an excellent job of that. It was quite readable, which I did over a couple of weeks time in many short reading sessions. While the book tries to deliberately avoid being another Photoshop book and tries to be balanced, presenting comparable aspects of other programs, it does describe key actions where Photoshop excels.

"Ready, set, shoot! And now lock yourself in your room for a month..." 2005-10-09
By E. M. Hobo (Everywhere)
Most of the book is on post-processing. This book assumes that you already have some idea of how to work your camera. Instead of really telling you how to do things, it focuses on how you can make things more easy on yourself.

It discusses the preparation, the shoot itself and post-production of the images. It doesn't tell you how to shoot perfectly, because in many conditions this just isn't possible. It does discuss how you can deal with those circumstances, making them work for you instead of you work for them all the time. It's general in its guidelines, but in-depth enough to show you how to do things for yourself.

This book assumes that you're a bit creative (which you really are, don't worry) and then helps you develop this creativity.

There's a lot in there, too much to put in here. (And it's all highly organised and easy to read.)

By Alex Orphanides (New York City)
Douglas Light shows great promise as a writer. His prose is fluid and the plot moves well. He creates interesting characters that have great potential but they are never truly realized or fulfilled. If it wasn't for the amazing and preposterous (good) situations our protagonist finds himself in, he is boring and unsympathetic. Solid first showing. I anticipate his next book.

 "A truly great read" 2007-04-05

East Fifth Bliss is one of the best new books I've seen in a long time. The characters are, by turns, sympathetic, endearing, maddening, hilarious, and generally hard to forget once you've put the book down. And the author's writing style is worth the price of admission all on its own. I think you're supposed to wrap these things up by saying, "If you like books about [BLANK], you'll love this book!" But East Fifth Bliss defies such reductionist categorizations--so I'll say that if you like great stories, great characters, and great writing, you'll love this book!

When this book arrived, I literally spent hours poring over it. It was all that I expected and more! I am familiar with color theory, so that information was not new, but I am delighted with the wardrobe planning information, the use of accessories, and the suggestions for dealing with problem areas of our bodies. I am a home sewer, and I am so motivated by this book that I plan to design capsule wardrobes for day, casual and evening. I look forward to choosing patterns and colors to make my wardrobe sparkle. And, by the way, I am anticipating celebrating my 70th birthday in two months, and finding a "improved" me is my birthday present to myself. This book is going to help me accomplish that task!

This is a book for both the individual trying to improve personal style as well as professionals in the image industry. As an image consultant myself, this is the first book that I have found that really covers every aspect of image. It even includes undergarments something that is lacking in 99% of image books on the market. This is the book to get. I now consider this my image bible. If I am doing workshops, its the only book I take with me in the event I have to answer a question to a subject which my not be the focus of my expertise (e.g. colour)

Forget the others, buy this book. You will not be sorry.

I just received this book in the mail this afternoon and I'm already halfway through it, I can't put it down! If you read "Happy Slapped" this is basically the same style, just all new stories. Karl sets off to various places to learn random thing, ie what his brain looks like.

It reads the way he speaks, which is comedy gold and a literary nightmare for snobs, I'm sure.

My only gripe is most of his illustrations retell the same stories that I just read a few pages back. Why not save a few specific stories for the purposes of telling them through illustration? Either way, it's nitpicking because even the few rehashed stories with pictures do their job of making us laugh.

From bike crashes, to growing up, to inspirational stories; this book has it all. Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul Three will bring a tear to your eye and put a smile on your face. It was organized by three adults. Kimberly Kirberger, Mark Hansen, and Jack Canfield. But the book itself was written purely by teens.

This edition of Chicken Soup is not the first. There are many others, including one for pet lovers! This book will really make you want to get up and do something. When reading these stories, I felt inspired to change something that I thought was wrong. I especially enjoyed that you don't have to read the book in order. You can pick the story that fits your mood, and from the first sentence you're captured. These stories are all non-fiction. Some are funny and some are sad, but each is special. If there's one you don't like, skip it!

One of the stories that I enjoyed was called "Some Things Are Never the Same." It's about two friends who are growing apart because of cliques. The popular friend falls into a trap. Her new "so called friends" make up rumors about her old friend. In the end, although the girl realizes her mistake, the friendship isn't the same. I can really relate to this because dealing with friendships can be hard.

The teens who submit to this book really have a story to tell. I think it's cool that they're true stories, because you can imagine being in their shoes. I really loved the book because it kept me reading for hours. The book also contains stories from famous actors, athletes, and singers. There is even a passage from The Diary of Anne Frank! That one touched me the most, I haven't read the book in years but that poem is one of the things I remember about it.

 "Crazy For Chicken Soup" 2006-10-25

Whenever I need a boost, I reach for the book and read the stories again.

The book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul Three really inspired me in many different ways. When I started reading this book I couldnt put it down for a second without wanting to pick it up again. This book has ben very helpful and useful to me. The book talks about real problems and stories that teens have sent to the publishers and published in their book. It's nice to have us young people writing stories and having them published for others to read them and be inspired. When ever you get the chance you should read this book so you can see what's so great and inspiring about his book.

 "greatest book ever!!" 2005-11-01

This book was totally awesome and I advise people to read it. It was one of the best books I have ever read and it gave me alot of advice through the very interesting stories they provided. This book was my favorite out of the "chicken noodle soup for the teenage soul" series. I really enjoyed reading it, for me it was one of those books that are so good you can't put it down. I really recommend this book if you like real life situations where you can really seem to realate to at least some of the stories. It feels like you have been in these sort of situations before and the stories kind of put you in the other person's shoes. This book made me feel sorry or happy for the main people in these stories and they made me think about my life and if I am hurting people or I made them feel the way some of the characters do. Long story short I really loved this book it had romance, tragedy, horror, suspense, and well... you get the idea, but it made me love it and I am sure if you read it you will feel the same as I did about this book.
