Translations of Beauty maps the tender yet tumultuous relationship of twin sisters Inah and Yunah, from their early years in South Korea to their coming-of-age in Queens, New York. At the heart of the narrative -- told from Yunah's intimate, engaging point of view -- is an unforgettable event from their childhood: an accident that disfigured Inah for life, and the overwhelming sadness and guilt Yunah feels at having been spared. Now that Inah and Yunah are adults, each in search of her own identity while trying to remain true to traditional family values, they must find a way to negotiate their past and become the people they dare -- and dream -- to be.

Emotionally charged and thought-provoking, Translations of Beauty is an insightful saga of the immigrant experience that will resonate with all readers.

 "Another Asian women hardship" 2007-05-31
By chym-a (Brooklyn, NY United States)
If you want to read this as another Asian American lit, it would pass as mediocre, OK in its own end, somewhat low key, more realistic look at the down side of immigration that is always a set deal with so called American dream, or Etopianism, which only translates an false ad of the promised land and the westward progress. But this has already become a cliche in the immigrant literature field.

I got more drawn to another subject: what a woman's esthetic feature means to her life. Reading this sort of study done by nobody but Korean female author like Yun somehow reminded me of another Korean immigrant author Suki Kim and her novel "Interpreter". Because women are judged and treated according to their looks, and actually, that seems to be the only thing they are valued for in the culture, Korean women's obsession always appears intense. Their outrageous enthusiasm for plastic surgery is attributed to this national faith in women's looks, which only equates the unabashed objetification of women, which is only the norm of the society. But they do not seem to see it as the institutional sadism against women or deplorable commodification of humen beings. I do beieve this phenomenon can't be criticized more.

All the more, a novel like this reads as a testimony of how disasterous it is for a woman not to be equipped with the asset she is supposed to have to manuever her life. In this context, the real tragedy is that authors like these, Yun or Suki KIM's, having no criticism for the culture of ultimate objectification or commodification of women. Their writings on another tale of how important looks are for women never help Korean women get over the fallacy they should not comply any more. The film director Kim Gidok shows way keener view on Korean women's condition. When it comes to the 'face' issue, check "Time" out, which is dealing with the science of cosmetic surgery and mechanism of people's minds regarding for women's faces.

 "Beautifully Written" 2005-04-21
By Daniel hodkins (St. Augustine, Florida)
I usually avoid Asian-American fiction as they are too similar in nature and too full of cliches. However, I read Mia Yun's poetically written House of the Winds and was hooked. I knew I had discovered a remarkable writer. Her new book, Translations of Beauty, explores the lives of two sisters, one horribly damaged. Once again, it is beautifully, even poetically written, always willing to take chances to arrive at painful truths and always avoiding cliches. Highly recommended!

 "Enjoyabl read..." 2005-01-08
By Blunt_Korean (Canada)
While there are many elements of this novel that bring forth emotional value, the element that struck me the most (reading as a Korean-Canadian male) was the wit instilled by Mia Yun to twins. In reading Mia Yun's narrative, I couldn't help but think back on my own immigrant experiences that remain so vivid within my own mind. The tension between the new and old world for children of Korean immigrants is one that we all have to endure and overcome. Clearly Mia Yun has found a voice for Korean-Americans.

 "New Immigrant Classic" 2004-12-26
By Booklover33 (Connecticut)
I had not heard of this novel or author when I saw the book on a list of "new immigrant classics" in a special New York Times feature on immigration, which is my area of study. And I must say that I agree that it shares something with the classics I love: that powerful, intangible that hits you and lingers after you finish the last word and makes you want to read it again. While ostensibly focused on the tribulations of a family of Koreans who immigrate to New York, the author has successfully transcended the genre and has provided a compelling and nuanced portrait of family relationships. Beautifully written and very highly recommended.

 "A novel of rare beauty " 2004-08-19
By Linda J. (Connecticut)
This is a novel of rare beauty which lingers in your mind long after you turn the last page. Whether in Korea, Italy or the immigrant mecca of Flushing, New York, Mia Yun offers the reader an impeccable and immediate sense of place. Written with subtle, comic and tragic touches, this palpably moving story of Korean-born twin sisters who immigrate to New York as small children explores many important issues such as self-identity, racial prejudice and the fleeting nature of beauty.

I enjoyed it tremendously. I am very eager to read this novel again as I feel there are more hidden treasures to discover.

Visual Culture is an introductory textbook book on visual literacy, exploring how meaning is both made and transmitted in an increasingly visual world. It is designed to introduce students to the analysis of all kinds of visual texts, whether drawings, paintings, photographs, films, advertisements, television programmes or new media forms. The book is illustrated with copious examples that range from medieval painting to contemporary record covers and is written in a lively and engaging style, avoiding unnecessary jargon.

The first part of the book is concerned with differing theoretical approaches to visual analysis, and includes chapters on iconology, form, art history, ideology, semiotics and hermeneutics. The merits and disadvantages of each are discussed, and there is a special focus on one seminal writer for each topic.

The second part shifts from a theoretical to a medium-based approach and comprises chapters on fine art, photography, film, television and new media. These investigate the complex relationship between reality and visual representation.

As a whole, this textbookbrings seemingly diverse approaches together under one roof while ultimately arguing for a polysemic approach to visual analysis. Each chapter concludes with a section of recommendations for further study.

Visual Culture provides an ideal introduction for students taking courses in visual culture and communication in a wide range of disciplines, including media and cultural studies, sociology, art history and design.

 "If I'd Only Known" 2007-11-02
By Amanda A. Adams (Texas)
This is the first time that I have read this author and now I'm kicking myself for waiting this long. I've seen her books on selves for years but for some reason always pasted them by. My mistake. This book was wonderful! It was like a mix of styles of Nora Roberts and Jennifer Crusie. It had the emotions and the real world serious situations of a Roberts, but the laughter and unpredictability that Crusie is known for. I was drawn in to the Candellano family immediatly. They're loud and loving and Child does a great job of letting you into all of their lives, not just the main characters. This book gives the storys of Carla, the youngest of the group, and Paul one of the twins. There's still Nick's book the remaining twin and I've got that one ordered and on it's way now. Can't wait! I hear she has another series about three sisters and I look forward to starting that as well. It's always exciting when you discover a great author. If you've never read Maureen Child before, you're missing something good.

"The Way Contemporary Romance Should Be" 2007-05-14
By Jennifer Wardrip (Central Illinois, USA)
I had somehow managed to overlook Maureen Child's books for years, but discovered her recently with the Marconi Sisters Trilogy. Those three great books coerced me into picking up the Candellano Family Trilogy, starting with FINDING YOU/KNOWING YOU. And I'm so glad I did!

In FINDING YOU, we meet Carla Candellano, the youngest Candellano sibling, and only daughter. Surrounded by Mama, the family matriarch, Tony, the oldest brother and town sheriff, and older twin brothers Nick and Paul, Carla is the "baby" of the family that they all dote upon. Carla's life had, until two years ago, been spent working for Searchers, a company that performed search operations to find missing victims in earthquakes, hurricanes, or those lost in mountains or forests. Along with her dog, Abbey, Carla was one of the best at her job, and it was her life. She loved doing what she could to find missing people with the help of her pet--until the one day she found a boy that she knew personally, too late to save him.

Ever since then, Carla has drawn away from everything that matters to her. She quit her job, moved back home to Chandler , California , and so far has avoided her Mama's plan to find her a husband. She's contented herself with spending time with Abbey and the new pups she plans to train as search dogs. Until Jackson Wyatt and his daughter, Reese, move into the summer place across from her own house.

Jackson has come to Chandler as a last resort. His six-year-old daughter was involved in a tragic automobile accident over a year ago that took her mother's life, and she hasn't spoken a word sense. He only has the summer to somehow get Reese to return to the land of the living before her haughty and very well-to-do maternal grandparents ship her off to a pshychiatric facility.

FINDING YOU is contemporary romance at it's best. Three people, each lost in their own memories, regrets, and heartbreak, will have to learn to love and trust again to find their way back to a wholesome life.

In KNOWING YOU, we get the story of Paul Candellano and Stevie Ryan. Stevie grew up with a wandering mother who searched the world for her next wealthy husband, but after several marriages and so much moving around, at twelve Stevie had had enough and moved to Chandler to live with her father. His love, along with the love and acceptance of her best friend, Carla Candellano, and her family finally gave Stevie a feeling of belonging.

She had also fallen in love with Nick Candellano, the "aw-shucks, look at me, I'm the best" NFL playing brother. When she got him too many times with another woman, Stevie finally gave up on rescuing Nick. Instead, the last few years have been spent making her business, The Leaf and Bean, the best coffee shop it can be, and rescuing the stray animals that she always seems to find in Chandler .

Now, after Carla's wedding to Jackson , Stevie is feeling a little lost, a little lonely, knowing that her relationship with Nick is definitely done and over, and that she may very well be destined to live her life forever alone. Until a night spent with her good friend, Paul, Nick's twin, where things heat up and one thing leads to another. Suddenly, it's not just Paul's friendship she's craving, but his body in her bed.

Paul Candelllano has always had a crush on Stevie Ryan. Long before she hooked up with Nick, Paul wanted to be more than the shoulder that Stevie cried on when Nick's antics drove her to tears. Now, he's finally had Stevie physically, but he's not sure where it will lead. What will the Candellano's, especially Nick, think about a budding relationship between the quiet, responsible twin that the other half of the Nick/Stevie whole?

KNOWING YOU is the story of a woman who has to come to terms with a birth mother who is never going to be who she wants to be, the discovery of a sibling that doesn't need to be rescued, and the fact that true love has to be persued, regardless of consequences.

This book, full of two wonderful, heartwarming stories, is a true delight for your keeper shelf!

 "Two engaging contemporary romances" 2003-05-16
By Harriet Klausner
"Finding You". Though Mama obviously loves her adult chidlren, Carla Candellano wished she cared a little less as her mother constantly harasses her to get married to the point she even asks her if she is a lesbian. Carla does not need a man in her life at this time as she still struggles with the tragedy that happened two years ago during a search and rescue mission. Carla meets new neighbor six year old Reece Wyatt, who has remained mute since his mother died last year. The duo hits it off on some angst-laden connection that soon brings the child's father Jackson into Carla's life. Though love blossoms between the two Wyatts and the Castellano, is that enough to forge a permanent relationship when each has to overcome anguish from their pasts?

"Knowing You". Carla's best friend Stevie Ryan has loved Carla's brother Nick forever. Though he likes her, the handsome Italian Stallion (though both are football stars, in this case Nick not the Crimson Tide's Johnny Musso) never returned the love except but treated her as if she was his little sister. However, recently Stevie finds herself dreaming of Nick's intellectual twin Paul and he seems eager to reciprocate. Will a shift in her affection lead to trouble between the siblings?

Both of these novels are engaging contemporary romances with a warm but a bit crazy ensemble that feels like the kitchen of many readers. The story lines will hook sub-genre readers because the characters seem genuine and friendly.

 "2011 is well-worth the read" 2008-12-19
By Kevin Dugan (Cincinnati, OH)
Richard Laermer's 12th book* is, to quote Nettie Hartsock, "a decadent read."

Serialization of Content

One of the trends Laermer details in this 300-page, fast read is serialization. Technology like iTunes and TiVo are making content more fluid to keep up with our time-starved attention spans.

Even his book reads more like a blog with 77 chapters and plenty of sidebars. You can dive in and out based in your interests.

One of the reasons I most enjoyed 2011 is that I did not agree with everything Laermer suggests in his book.

That said he does provide insight into how society, religion, media, technology and even language/communication skills are all changing. More than just trends, Laermer gets the reader to think about what it all means. 2011 looks towards a bigger, more important picture. You may see it differently, but this book helps you expand your focus.

Bottom Line?

As my cover shot shows, 2011 is a good summer read. You should check it out...and not just because it's free.

Yo, check it. Laermer's style is the dopest, phattest, wiggity-wiggiest.

And that is a direct quote from my grandmother!

In all seriousness, there are few people today who can pull together thoughts

like the ones you will find in 2011. Thought-provoking and stimulating and definitely a worthwhile read if you are at all interested in staying ahead of the curve and drilling down to truly original, "real" ways of doing business. Highly recommended.

"This is a terrific and timely book!" 2008-12-16
By Mark Ramsey (California)
Okay, I was going to do a video review but my hair's a mess, so here's the bottom line: This book is really good. Just enough tongue in cheek to make the hard-boiled trend prognostication go down.

Laermer is a well known marketing and branding provocateur and PR guru who, from what I can tell, is an absolute sponge for what's next.

One of the points that Richard makes so brilliantly is that the future of trend predicting is knowing how to predict them yourself - for your own benefit. For this reason he offers up not only things to look for but ways to look for things to look for, if that makes sense.

That makes this a toolkit worth reading. And stray comments about Jennifer Lopez don't hurt either.

After reading Punk Marketing and finding it not only enjoyable, but quite accurate and useful, I was hopeful that '2011 Trendspotting' would be at least equal to Punk Marketing.......well, it's BETTER. The author seems to have an uncanny insight into people's buying motivations, trends, and media choices. Besides what one can "learn" to watch for, there's some very humerous passages about the current and past mind-set & fads of society.

I had to read this book for my graduate program in management and its the first one that didn't bore me to tears. Richard Laermer has written an entertaining and fast-paced critique of western culture yet the reader is still required to think. Remember the goal is to learn how to spot trends. Keep that in your head while he throws topic after topic at you destroying conventional wisdom in the process.

A big, brash history of Guns n’ Roses charismatic, talented and idiosyncratic leader

“An archetypal rock biography that captures the runaway-train spirit of the singer and his band—You don’t have to be a Guns N’ Roses fanatic to dig this energetic, comprehensive, few-holds-barred portrait of modern metal’s most charismatic figure.”—Kirkus Reviews

Even in the rock world, a figure like Axl Rose doesn’t come along very often.  Mercurial and brilliant, deluded and imperious, Rose defies easy description.  W.A.R. reveals Rose’s childhood influences (and how he got his name), tracks the birth of G n’ R and delves into the stories behind their monster albums Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion.  But with those successes came excesses—drugs, infighting and a lead singer who morphed from eccentric to seemingly unhinged.

Journalist Mick Wall had unprecedented access to Rose and G n’ R during their heyday and gives a more richly detailed portrait of the band than you’ve ever read before.  W.A.R. has fresh views on:

--the death of two fans at the Donington Park concert in England

--Rose’s fallout with all the other original G n’ R band members, including Slash

--fights with Kurt Cobain, Vince Neil and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger

--Rose’s no-shows at concerts throughout his career

--the lead singer’s becoming a recluse at his Malibu mansion for most of the last fifteen years

--the much-gossiped-about and long-awaited album Chinese Democracy

Forget Watch You Bleed or any of the other so-called insightful books about Axl and GNR, Mick Wall is the only one I've read by anybody that actually knew the singer and the band. I've been a huge Guns fans since 87 and thought I knew it all - but I really didn't. I'm amazed at all the other reviews on this page saying there's nothing new in it. They must be written by nerds who spend their lives on GNR chat rooms cos this book is full of stuff I'd NEVER heard before. Brilliantly written too, in that classic style you just do't get here in the US. No, Axl don't come out of it smelling of roses, but he sure comes out packing his guns. And so does Mick Wall. A great book, one of the best of its kind I've ever read. Don't be fooled by the fools who don't want you to know the truth - get it!!

A journalist who had unprecedented access to Guns n’ Roses at their peak delivers a big, brash history of the band’s charismatic, fantastically talented and idiosyncratic leader—W. Axl Rose

Even in the world of rock and roll, a figure like Axl Rose doesn’t come along very often.  Mercurial and brilliant, deluded and imperious, Rose defies easy description or analysis. Few people have studied Rose as closely as Mick Wall has.  Traveling with Guns n’ Roses and writing about them in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Wall first earned Axl’s trust and later his fury.

W.A.R. goes back to the beginning, revealing Rose’s childhood influences (and how he got his name), and tracking the birth of the band and their enormous success with albums like “Appetite for Destruction” and “Use Your Illusion.”  With fame and money came substance abuse and infighting, and a lead singer who morphed from eccentric to seemingly unhinged.  Wall’s book is richly detailed and offers surprising new views on some celebrated Guns ’n Roses and Axl Rose incidents, including:

--the death of two fans at a concert in Donington Park in England,

--Rose’s fall-out and eventual split from every one of the other original Gn’R band members,

--fights with perceived enemies like Kurt Cobain, Motley Crue’s Vince Neil and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger,

--Rose’s consistent refusal to show up at concerts throughout his career,

--Axl becoming a virtual recluse at his Malibu mansion for most of the past 15 years.

The book goes right up to the present, to explore why a new Guns n’ Roses—with a reconfigured band—has toured but still hasn’t released their long-awaited album “Chinese Democracy”, now over a decade in the making at a cost of over $13 million. W.A.R. is about great music, bad relationships, and the public and private personas of one of the most controversial performers of our time.

 "And the winner is.....Buckethead!" 2009-02-02
By William Kalal (Strangebend, NY)
OK this is an amalgam of every scrap of tabloid gossip ever put together about the band continuing to generate controversey twenty years later. rehashed, hack-writing, second hand story telling, but still fun to read. Get the slash book first if you haven't though.

Who would of thunk that of Axl and Buckethead, Buckethead would have been the more business-like person. Sick of no-shows, riots, and four hour stage delays... Mr.Buckethead leaves, for much less money doing his own gigs.

 "Forget Watch You Bleed" 2009-01-29
By Nick Coxon (Dublin)

 "Get in the Ring" 2008-07-17
By N. Kain
This book is a joke. it has to be, because there is no way that the author could have an unbiased opinion. all you really need to do to know the quality of this book is listen to axl's rant in the GN'R song "Get in the Ring"

 "Research is poor..." 2008-04-23
By Driver8 (Los Angeles)
I was browsing through this book yesterday and read the section of the book where the author talks about the recording of "Sympathy for the Devil." This song was recorded at Rumbo Recorders -- I used to work there and was present during these sessions. The author does not mention Rumbo, and has these sessions taking place at another studio. To me, this would be an easy thing to verify.

"Some things can't be taught" 2006-09-03
By Blanca Bassion (Deerfield Beach, FL USA)
As a vocalist myself, I don't think it's realistic to think that stage prescence can be TAUGHT. All the best equipment, all the most beautiful gowns in the world will not help without real talent, professionalism and hard work and experience.Singers come and go, the ones that remain working in their field are the ones with the most talent and the toughest hides.I think this book is misleading.

 "Not just for girls!" 2006-03-10
By Z. Wolf (Boca Raton, FL)
My sister bought this book, loved it, and told me to read it since I'm a musical theater major. I was skeptical since I'm a guy, and it is written for women, but the information the author gives is really helpful. So if you are a male vocalist, don't overlook this little gem for your library. It is very entertaining and informative as well as priceless for all the trade secrets.

"Excellent guide for girls wishing to sing professionaly" 2005-05-05
By Catherine E. Jennkins (Palm Springs, Fla.)
This book is very well written, with clear, practical and concise information that should be invaluable to entering the scary world of becoming a diva. Humor is interjected throughout the book making it very entertaining as well as readable. Overall it is a guide that contains wisdom from experience that should help a hopeful singer to avoid many mistakes as well as ideas toward reaching the diva goal.
