 "Excellent publicity resource" 2008-09-07
By Anne Lagache (Orinda, CA, USA)
I volunteered to be the publicist of a non-profit group then searched Amazon and the library for a comprehensive reference how-to book. This book is IT. The first part of the book is, I'd like to say, background reading which explains to you the reader what you've gotten yourself into. The last part of the book shows you what you have to do to be a really good publicist. It's called "A crash course in Publicity." The book has everything in it that you need. I just wish my Board would read some of it so we could follow a publicity plan which this book highly recommends - and I think it is a great idea. It's a hardback which is Really good because you'll be referring to it often. I highly recommend this book if you need a comprehensive reference book on publicity.

"A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH GUIDE TO PUBLICITY" 2008-05-03
By Gian Fiero (Hollywood, California)
After teaching two semesters of publicity at San Francisco State, I ordered about 6 publicity books off of Amazon and I read them all cover-to-cover.

The Complete Guide To Publicity was the best in terms of accuracy, thoroughness, and real-life application.

Joe's years of experience and casual writing style makes the valuable information contained throughout this book very easy to digest and comprehend. It deals with, and focuses on, the principles and philosophies of publicity as they relate to the business professional who is attempting to maximize the visibility of their product, service or organization. It's an older book with no mention of the Internet, but the education provided is applicable.

For students who are interested in a publicity primer before - or in lieu of - taking a course in publicity, this is the book to get...and it's practically free here on Amazon.

Marconi obviously knows what he's talking about. He knows how great publicity is. I'm struggling to get my band into the papers and I'm tryin' and I'm tryin' and I keep getting the hard slap to the face. I mean, how are people gonna know where we're playin'?!

I loved this book! I liked Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired more, especially for the net stuff. But, Marconi is a good all-arounder. Totally covers all the stuff from the net to the unnet. Lots o' tips and stuff. Like I said, Marconi knows what he's talking 'bout.

Great stuff!

 "A great publicity primer!" 2000-11-04
By Adam F. Jewell (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
Everything presented in this book will help those charged with the task of generating publicity. Fundamentally, it must be remembered that publicity is just that, it is not paid advertising, it must be managed, but cannot be completely controlled. The goal of the publicist is to provide relevant, newsworthy, information, which will be deemed to be of interest to a target audience. Present the media with an honest, credible, story, that will help them accomplish their goals (attracting more viewers, selling more papers or magazines, or attracting more interested readers to a web site) and your story is more likely to be heard by those you desire to reach.

"The Complete Guide to Publicity" clearly defines publicity, what it is and is not, what to expect from a publicity effort, as well as the particulars to consider when dealing with various media and attempting to target specific audiences with your story.

An excellent introduction to the strategy and structure of a publicity campaign!

First, assemble the ingredients. Mrs. Olive Mackie, her husband Duane and her teenage son Felix. Uncle L. D., age 91, who depends on various females of this story to keep him going. Dr Martin Bates, student of dentistry, so helpful and charming... Assorted women of the neighborhood, who all went to school together. And, of course, Miss Undine, the retired schoolteacher of them all.

Now, mix them all together and accelerate. Gossip and rumors start spinning, congealing into delicious back biting. Wait for it to stop spinning, to see whose life and reputation is still in one piece.

A delightful book, full of humor and sharply etched pictures of life in a small southern town.

I have always been a proponent of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer(and the Tridentine Mass) and in somewhat opposition to modern liturgy. It seems that the curse of Vatican 2 is that every other Church feels the need to emulate the Novus Ordo Mass in some way, as does the 1979 Prayer Book. However, I realise that there is a whole generation who don't know the 28 BCP and furthermore don't understand its language; ergo, one must make 'some' changes here. Since I do urban work, i can relate to this prayer book. I can appreciate a Hip-Hop Mass. It may not be my particular 'thang' but if others benefit from it, then I'm for it. I did have to scratch out several places where God is referred to as 'mother' because it is Scripturally wrong. Jesus called God, 'Father', and NOT 'mother'. End of discussion. But, I would encourage those who do inner city ministry and other interested parties as well, to obtain a copy of this book and learn from it and benefit as well.

Psalm 23 as adapted by Ryan Kearse The Lord is all that, I need for nothing. He allows me to chill. He keeps me from being heated and allows me to breathe easy. He guides my life so that I can represent and give shouts out in his Name. And even though I walk through the Hood of death, I don't back down for you have my back. The fact that you have me covered allows me to chill. He provides me with back-up in front of my player-haters and I know that I am a baller and life will be phat.  "very good. something strange about the inking" 2009-05-23
By Edward Heil
Overall this seems far above average (like many Impact titles) among the how-to-draw-cartoon/comics/manga books on the shelves. The author gives serious advice instead of just giving a bunch of examples to fill pages.

One thing that seems really weird. The inked and colored versions of the animals look crappy. Mediocre, pedestrian. The penciled versions of the exact same drawings look outstanding -- fresh, alive. I can't put my finger on what made such a difference, but something did. Dude needs another inkier, or to try a different inking technique!

IMHO of course.

"Excellent Cartoon Manual for Beginners and Experts Alike" 2009-03-02
By John Joyce (Dublin, Ireland)
[...]

This cartoon manual by Harry Hamernik (author of the equally excellent carticature manual - "Face Off")neatly bridges the gap between beginner and expert instruction. It does this via a brief introduction to materials, leading in turn to basic shapes, anatomy and character design - all in an easy to follow, step by step method which will have even beginners able to draw the basics by page 31.

What it then does, which will be useful to more experienced cartoonists who may not have specialised in cartoon animals before, is to present over seventy pages of "practice gallery" featuring projects on a wide range of animals - from chimpanzees to crocadiles and snakes to sharks - which again are basic enough for the beginner, but also rich enough in character for the more experienced artist to use as a base for detailed work or for animation.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book as a great introduction to anyone interested in drawing cartoon animals, at whatever level.

This book is nothing short of spectacular. The author takes you step by step with clear and concise instructions on how to draw cartoon animal characters. Having owned Harry's first book, "Face off". I knew this one would be a good book I bought the book for my 9 year old son who loves to draw. We have only owned this book for about a month and i have noticed his skills in drawing have gotten a lot better. This book has material for pretty much all skill levels. If your looking to learn how to draw cartoon animals, look no further because this book really has it all. I give this book an A+. Looking forward to more great books from this author!!

 "excellent book" 2008-12-28
By Andrew W. Hung (Austin, TX USA)
This is an excellent book. I am a new cartoonist and I've been looking through a lot of books over the past few weeks. Most of them suffer from the same problem - they focus too much on showing off the author's own art and fill the pages with huge pictures while providing little instruction on how the reader can produce their own works.

This book is different. It has very little filler. Spends one or two pages on materials, rather than 20 like in a lot of other books. The author spends time telling you how to construct each different part of the animal and teaches you tricks that will allow you to draw them from any angle facing any direction without having them appear "off." He teaches you how to place the features on the face properly and how to construct a proportional body. Hamernik is genuinely interested in teaching the readers how to create their own animals and every picture he shows in the book is just an example, rather than something to just copy.

Like I said, the author seems genuinely interested in teaching as best as he possibly can. He even has a facebook group where you can post your cartoonimals and receive feedback. Pretty impressive, and he doesn't charge money for it.

This is probably the best book out there if you want to learn to draw cartoon animals. I've looked at a lot of others and they are more focused on just teaching you how to copy their drawings, which is alright for a beginner like myself... but eventually you will want to learn the principals that will allow you to create great looking, original pictures. This is the book for you if that is what you are trying to achieve.

The International Handbook of Student Experience in Elementary and Secondary School is the first handbook of its kind to be published. It brings together in a single volume the groundbreaking work of scholars who have conducted studies of student experiences of school in Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, England, Ghana, Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States. Drawing extensively on students interpretations of their experiences in school as expressed in their own words, chapter authors offer insights into how students conceptualize and approach school, how students understand and address the ongoing social opportunities for and challenges in working with other students and teachers, and the multiple ways in which students shape and contribute to school improvement. The individual chapters are framed by an opening chapter, which provides background on, bases of, and trends in research on students experiences of school, and a final chapter, which uses the interpretive framework translation provides to explore how researching students experiences of school challenges those involved to translate the qualitative research methods they use, the terms they evoke to describe and define students experiences of schools, and, in fact, themselves as researchers.
