Sometimes working to obtain the things we want out of life can take priority over truly living in that life. Everything seems to be on track for thirty year-old Carmen Perdue. She has a career she loves, a home of her own, and a best friend for sharing all her secrets with. But a sudden, serious medical condition threatens to turn her life upside down, and cause her to re-evaluate what's truly important. Forced to examine her life and take things at a different pace, Carmen-with the help of her supportive best friend, her combative mother, estranged sister, and a new man in her life-learns that it's not always the final destination that we should be living for.  "Great read. Great characters." 2009-08-15
By Steven G. Stromp (Elkhorn, NE)
I thought I would buy a book from a new author, read about this on Amazon. I was really impressed. Great story with vivid and heartfelt characters that I could identify in my own circle. Very well done.

Funny enough, I liked the book so much I shared it and my friend from Spokane had the same comments as I posted. The bottom line is if you are in the need of a fresh and engaging writing style, I though "A Few Good Days" was a great read. Enjoy.

 "An Excellent First Book" 2009-04-03

A Few Good Days

I loved the characters in the book and it felt more like I was there with them rather than reading about them. I can't wait to read more books by Melanie Bollen.

"Reading Again and Loving It!" 2009-03-24
By wishicouldb (Omaha, NE)
Terrific break out novel for Melanie Bollen. Being a Mom, it's sometimes hard to find time to read books for myself, but this was a nice easy read with several chapters that easily allow for "Mommy breaks." I highly recomend this book for anyone, especially those with busy schedules that are looking for a little something to fill their "reading void."

Melanie paints a very vivid picture of the story with her words I felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book. I couldn't help but fall for the characters and it was a page turner to discover how it all ends. This author knows how to draw her audience in and I will look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

 "a relaxing read" 2009-03-19
By Leisurely Reader (USA)
Excellent book for Melanie Bollen's first attempt! I enjoyed all the characters...they were very likable and witty (much like this book!). It was a fast read and I really enjoyed the short chapters because it made it easier to just read a little at a time (great for busy schedules). This would be a relaxing beach read for the summer. Doesn't get the full 5 stars from be because of price & a little predictability of the story. Nonetheless, a great read & I'll be excited to read more by Melanie Bollen.

"Another wonderful collection of hooked rugs" 2001-07-22
By Rosemary A. Strube (Green Valley, AZ USA)
This annual series of hooked rugs is always inspirational. But then I'm a little prejudiced as one of my hooked pieces is in this issue. The photography is first rate and you get a 2 page description/picture of each juried piece. There are 36 total pieces featured.

A Magazine of Her Own? studies the development of women's magazines, reveals in fascinating detail just how they have shaped the images of women which prevail today.

Like the corset, the women's magazines which emerged in the nineteenth century produced a "natural" idea of femininity: the domestic wife; the fashionable woman; the romancing and desirable girl. Their legacies, from agony aunts to fashion plates, are easily traced in their modern counterparts. But do these magazines and their promises empower or disempower their readers? A Magazine of Her Own? is a lively and revealing exploration of this immensely popular form from its beginnings. It is at once a chronological tracing of the history, a collection of intriguing case studies and an intervention into recent debates about gender and sexuality in popular reading.

Women's magazines are a huge and influential industry. They hold huge potential for empowering women, while appearing to peddle an oppressive image of woman as domestic goddess, fashion icon, and sex figure. A Magazine of Her Own?, Beetham's fascinating study of the development of women's magazines, reveals in detail just how they have shaped the prevailing image of modern women.
