We returned just yesterday from a two week trip to the area described in the book. We took it with us and read a chapter or two every night. We were dealing with real estate issues while we were there, so the property management topics were a lot of fun. Our property is in Lliber, so the descriptions of that town had us in hysterics. We were pleased to find the restuarant L'Era in Parcent used in the book as a party site is very real and very, very good. Although the characters in the book that are male are quite well "fleshed out", he is not as favorable to women. Both my husband and I commented on that. The plot set up is great, but the resolution of the crime and the too cliche ending for a fairly complex main character was not satisfying.

I picked up this book whilst on holiday in Spain. It sparked my interest, as the plot centered around the area I was visiting.



Harrison pulls you around the Jalon Valley, back and forth to Alicante and describes in wonderful detail the purpose of life in general, from the viewpoint of an outsider 'coming in' and from the Spanish villagers trying to embrace the tourists euro.



He somehow manages to jump inside an old villagers head, attempting to preserve the quality and purpose of the family unit and REAL quality of life. And there's a cracking plot too! You just won't guess 'whodunnit' at least I didn't anyway!



My favourite bit of the book is a mouth watering description of a cool beer, a tomato, some goats cheese and bread and olive oil in the Jalon valley at 9.30 in the morning. The finest French chef with a 101 sauces simply couldn't compete.



I'm wandering.... A great book.... a must buy.

Jackie Christian called "Love Is the Drug" and the lead

character is REAL ROXANNE. She's a black girl and a movie

critic named after the famous rapper and that book is FIRE!

I loved reading that this weekend too.

Because of the subject matter, I thought that this book would be dull. On the outside, it seems to be about "getting a man." But the primary theme of this paperback is the importance of friends. As the four friends struggle in their efforts to find "a good man", they find that their girlfriends are always there, no matter what. They help each other through life's changes and challenges. This story is funny in parts and entertaining overall. The characters are realistic enough that the reader actually cares what happens to them. Enjoy this book, just for fun.

I liked Terry McMillan's "The Interruption of Everything", so I was really looking forward to reading this book- but it was one of the worst, most frustrating books I've ever read. First of all, the writing is on about a sixth-grade level. Example: "...Charles asked me if I wanted to dance. I said yes. So we danced. He danced like a man who was sure of himself. He watched me. I watched him. He smiled at me. I smiled at him." That's when I rolled my eyes and gave up. Unfortunately it was on page 365!! From then on I scanned the rest of the pages, just to satisfy my curiosity about what would happen to the rest of these characters.

Secondly, most of the characters are complete morons, except for Gloria, who seemed real to me. (Working mom, single, trying to do the best for her son...) The other three jump into bed with EVERY man they meet, usually within the first three hours of meeting him. Then they whine and moan about how there are no good men out there. Well, DUH!!! Perhaps this is the point of the book, self-fufilling prophecy.

I do like the title. It describes that feeling of waiting while what you want (husband, job, baby, etc.) hasn't happened yet. But this book was a disappointing waste of time.

I sympathized with both Pat and Gayle because they went through alot with and without one another. The were both opposites but that did not stop them from showing genuine friendship to one another. I will suggest this book to anyone who is going through a rough time and feel like its the end, because both ladies go through alot but the learn how to make it, and they also learned that the rough times feel so much better when you have a true friend on your side.

I don't know that mere words can adequately articulate the genius of this book. I don't think I have ever read a book that kept my attention and called for me the way this one did. I also don't recall ever reading ahead just so I could know the outcome in a story, but I did with this one (only on one chapter). I did go back and read all of the chapter. :) The book draws you in and doesn't let you go. I tried every night to finish the book, but morning came sooner than the end of the book. I took baths that seemed to last for hours just so I could read this book. I will definitely keep a copy in my library and one for my daughters' hope chests. I know that I am behind in time seeing that this book was published in 1997, but how timeless it is!!! I don't know what I will do with my life now. :) THIS BOOK DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!!
