 "A real makeover guide" 2009-11-10
By Cape Cod Prof (Boston, MA)
10 Steps to Fashion Freedom inspired me to analyze what was missing in my wardrobe by helping me to see what it was I really wanted to project. The results have been amazing. I went through the process of linking my authentic self with clothes that would bring it out. I purged my wardrobe and replaced the missing parts with clothes that filled a need for my lifestyle and image. I now get more compliments than ever, am not afraid to spend money on quality over quantity, and am enjoying clothes like never before. I truly recommend this briliant book for anyone who has a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.

Usually the book with photos catches my interest. But this book draws out what you really is important to you, starts with the base. Like building a house, it is the good foundation, and you can go up and out, building your "house" with rooms of interest. You've got to start somewhere, this book will cement your likes and dislikes.

I have had this book for several years. As I've aged and matured, I have given it another go and I still find it to be most unhelpful. They talk a good talk, but they leave out, in a most egregious way, how to walk the walk. This book doesn't help you. This book is like a candy bar when you are hungry. I think Brenda Kinsel's books are good, and so is "Clothes Minded" by Andrea L. Siegel. They help you figure out specific elements. This book, is disappointing in that maybe they felt they should write a book, but kind of missed the margin of how to relate to the rest of us by miles. Based on the book, I actually hired them as consultants, they surprised me by suggesting that everything I purchase come from a sale rack. In the book, they say that its worth it to spend money on key pieces that you love, yet in person, they practice the opposite of this advice. I really do not recommend this approach. Brenda Kinsel and others are much much much better for helping you, discover you.

I read this book a few years ago, and while I did not do all the excercises (in fact, I can't remember if I did any), I loved the book and the concept that it is more important to know who you are and what image you want to give off than to know the "right" things to wear. I enjoyed the personal stories of the people who shared their journeys into the shark infested waters of style. This book gave me confidence that I would know what was right for me when I found it. I read a lot of books at that time about body types and color charts, etc, but this is the one that made the biggest impression. You won't find any cookie cutter advice or rules to cramp your style in here!

"A superb image guide to DISCOVERING your style. Not "copying" it." 2005-10-14
By Jennifer A. Rae (Kingston, Ontario, Canada)
This is an extraordinary book. Having read many books on style, this is the first one to assert that style is something that must be discovered and developed - not envied and copied. The book requires a fair amount of reflection and written work, and those looking for "quick tips" (like the reader who complains the book won't help a stay-at-home mom choose a "power suit" for a school board meeting) are unlikely to find the easy answers they seek. But really, aren't there enough style books like that already? And isn't it true that we picked up a new style book because those kind are just so limited and formulaic?

I am disheartened by some of the reviews for this book. The same reader above is full of excuses as to why fashion just won't work for her - having an "image" is for artists, for entrepreneurs. Not for mere employees who risk the wrath of a pink slip for wearing a new belt. How ridiculous. I'm a doctor - there are few professions as conservative as that. There is no job I can think of in which expressing your creativity to some degree is a bad thing. We all have "limits" placed on how we dress; nowhere in the book is there a recommendation to fly in the face of common sense and decorum.

The same reader takes offense to the authors' assertion that elastic waistbands, oversized pockets and patch pockets are unfashionable. Well, they ARE unfashionable. But, the reader laments that they are comfortable, useful. Maybe. But fashionable? That's why the book isn't called Ten Steps to Comfort Freedom. This reader assumes that the authors don't know what it is to really "work" (presumably like she does). And she laments that style may take time - even ironing! - "and who has the time for that these days?" she asks. I guess the answer to that would be: someone willing to put aside a bit of time because they think their appearance matters. This reviewer has already decided that she can make no wardrobe or image changes because of the extreme physical demands of her job, the dictatorial condemnation of her bosses, and a belief in comfort and convenience at all cost. What this reader needs is not a new style. She needs a new life!

Another reader claims that the authors "insist" on shopping at high-end stores. That just isn't true. However, there's few of us that won't admit we wish we'd saved for a really good pair of shoes, rather than the four cheap and trendy pairs we now never wear. I have used this book to transform my way of dressing and shopping - I still shop at Walmart; I just shop there smarter now. This book isn't for everyone; if you're looking for pictures, be advised that there isn't a one. But if you're looking for photos of fashion, buy a magazine. Rest assured, if you're motivated and willing to do the work, you WILL find your unique personal style - and that has nothing to do with whether you shop at Walmart or Rodeo Drive.

Moms get a lot of advice from TV shows, magazines, friends, their own mothers, and more. But all of this well-meaning counsel tends to paralyze moms. They worry about their children's self-esteem, their health, and whether or not their children like them. They even agonize over scrapbooking every moment of development. Julie Barnhill says, "Enough already!" Unapologetically raucous, slightly irreverent, and refreshingly relevant, One Tough Mother exposes the mind-numbing, brain-draining, confidence-depleting minutia moms get stuck in. With humor and a sharp wit, Julie offers moms a dose of reality and a way to calm their fears about raising children. She encourages moms to straighten up, take back the control from their children, and stand firm on the nonnegotiables. With her help, any mom can become one tough mother.

"Kind of a letdown after reading She's Gonna Blow" 2008-08-22
By luvmylilgirl (Eastern Washington)
I'm the mother of an extremely spirited four year old. I have read alot of parenting books, and One Tough Mother kind of came across as a much weaker version of them Raising Your Spirited Child Rev Ed: A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, and EnergeticThe New Strong-Willed ChildTeach Them Diligently: How To Use The Scriptures In Child Training. This book is good for a laugh and you definitely feel like you've got good company in mothering difficult children, but it just didn't do much for me. It's a bit too general compared to other reads. To her credit though, She's Gonna Blow!: Real Help for Moms Dealing with Anger was life changing, and I owe my patient, loving yet firm style of motherhood mostly to her.

I loved this book because it finally gave me permission to question some of the things that clearly weren't working for me, but I didn't have the nerve to question them myself. I just kept growing more and more frustrated and ended up thinking that I wasn't cut out to be a parent, until I read this book and got some helpful way's of saying NO ... decided to get off of the vicious cycle of 'advice' seeking and feeling guilty because I didn't feel right about making life all about my kids. I feel a lot freer as a parent and less stressed out, better able to make decisions that I'm comfortable with. I really believe that God is using her experience to minister to other mom's like me. (by the way, I am the "ambivalent mom" :)

Just finished ordering a copy of this for my sister. This is One Tough Book to Put Down (there's your sequel, Julie!)

I know Julie - she goes to my church. Therefore, I can't possibly be impartial, right? Wrong. You think I agree with every word that's uttered in that building? Only doofuses do that. But, before I go on with my review, I thought I should let y'all know, in fairness, that I know Julie.

I would write a long review, but I'm busy parenting. So let me just say this: If you love your kids, and you love the Lord, and you want what's best for your kids, and you seek to do God's will, this is the book for you. Way to go, Julie.

Plus, the book is hilarious. I love Julie's candor, honesty (do those two words mean the same thing? I'm an English teacher and ya got ME!), and the conversationality of the words. I can hear Julie's voice as I read.

BUY THIS for yourself and for all, yes, ALL of your MOM FRIENDS. NO, not your MOM'S friends, your MOM friends. DO IT NOW. Good girl.

I was surprised to find this parenting book was heavily Christian. Bible verses, Christian theology, and prayers you and your kids can do are sprinkled throughout the text. I have no problem with Christians writing Christian parenting guides, but I would like something on the cover that identifies them.

The book gives some good common sense advice like being firm with your kids, letting the small things go, and holding on to your own identity and interests in the midst of parenting.

I disagree with the suggestion to find medical advice on the internet, but moms trusting their intuition and questioning doctors is of course good sense.

In summary, it's not a bad potpourri of parenting tips, but I found the omission of any reference to this being a Christian guide on the cover strange.

Being a mother can make you a little bit crazy. Listening to all the advice from friends, family, and the nearly endless self-help books, can take that crazy to a whole new level. This book will help calm this craziness with intelligent and sensible advice with a huge dose of humor. It is a quick read that is hard to put down and is one parenting book that you will be very glad you read.

One Tough Mother gives no nonsense advice on how to be a strong woman who is a strong mother. Broken down into ten "non-negotiables," this book is packed full of great ideas on how to take back your sanity and build love, trust, and respect in your household. Smattered throughout the advice are real stories that give life and context to these ideas.

Seemingly common sense areas of parenting are sometimes so hard to remember or even feel comfortable with, and this book helps bring them into focus. With chapters like how to say no (I know can comfortably say no in several languages to video game playing) to how to start praying for your children, this book offers tips that every parent can use.

Throughout the book sidebars present great outside resources and concepts. These little quips and links offer some great ideas for additional research and topics. The book concludes with a great appendix that reminds you that you are a woman and as such, you deserve some self-care time and expense. It offers great tips on hair, skin, makeup and general upkeep that a lot of moms mistakenly put on the backburner.

Armchair Interviews says: Great advice, interesting stories, and laugh-out-loud humor, make One Tough Mother one awesome book.

From gaining weight ("The Newlywed Nineteen is the little-known cousin of the Freshman Fifteen"), to handling finances ("What if neither of us is good at it?") to the rigors of Thanksgiving at the in-laws', being married changes everything. But no one ever talks about it. No one ever explains how to Love, Honor, and Cherish a man who thinks empty milk glasses and pistachio shells make nice coffee-table décor. A man who not only takes forever in the bathroom, but somehow keeps forgetting that your shampoo and conditioner are off limits!

No one, that is, until Jenny Lee. A former swinging city girl who married for love but then faced the fish-out-of-water reality of sharing a life with a man who is nothing like her, Ms. Lee decided it was high time to reveal the secrets that no one would tell her before the ceremony. A perfect shower gift, I DO. I DID. NOW WHAT? throws back the covers on a newlywed's first year-after you send the Vera Wang into storage and realize that you're suddenly a wife, with a real live husband... and one TV remote.

Sharply observed, full of sass and wit, I DO. I DID. NOW WHAT? is the book that no fiancée, bride, or newlywed should be without -the one book that can answer the eternal nuptial question: Why do I want to kill the person I just vowed to spend the rest of my life with?

"SO HILARIOUS & SO TRUE!!!" 2007-07-10

These anecdotes will have you rolling! Hysterically funny and witty! I'm Korean-American like Lee and even though she doesn't delve too much into the whole racial/cultural issue just the stories about newlywed life are too candid to be made up! The part where she jumps up and says: "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE DOING THIS! YOU'RE SPOILING HIM!" when Lee's traditional mother brings her new son-in-law his favorite drink (lemon-lime Gatorade - just like my own husband!) on a silver tray with a crystal highball glass filled with ice. This is something my own mother has actually done.

The Great Dinner Debate is something we, to this day, still struggle with.

Anyway, this is a fast-paced, endearing, comical read. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down!

By L. Fisk (brooklyn, ny)
people are very divided on this book, but i wasn't into it. i guess the author is trying to be funny but she is so shallow, petty, and self centered, it seems to me that she wanted a wedding and not a marriage. last time i checked i enjoy hanging out with my husband, don't really care if he beats me at scrabble, or uses my shampoo. because those things don't matter. i guess if the book was funnier or more insightful i could have gotten beyond the whinning. but when you start the book basically complaining that you went to st. lucia, i can hardly relate.

I love this book! The first time I read it, I just could not stop laughing. And now, after a year, I am rereading it. It still cracks me up. I can relate to so many of the same experiences which Jenny Lee writes about. It is a very light fun read. Her writing is comical and very easy to read. I just bought her newest book "skinny bitching" and can't wait to start reading it.

"I Do. I Did. Now What?! Life After the Wedding Dress" 2005-12-12
By Melanie (Appleton, WI)
While it was a fun book to read, it was not at all what I thought it would be. I was looking for a book to help me with my nerves about my own wedding. The book jacket promises; how to meet other couples, cleaning compromises, and other mysteries solved. I really didn't see what mysteries it solved, nor to it answer any of the other promises. Like I said before it was fun to read, its short and quick, but does it answer any questions, I didn't think so. I also read The Conscious Bride by Sheryl Nissinen. When I looked at it the first couple of times I thought it was a book trying to talk you out of getting married, not so. It really makes you think about different aspects of your engagement and relationship, now that was a helpful book!

Hello. My Name is Jenny. And I'm a Wife

Her Vera Wang gown still warm, Jenny Lee explores the subject no friend would ever talk about: what happens after the band stops playing and the guests go home. Covering finances, the freakish occurrences of getting beaten at Scrabble, meeting other couples, and establishing principles ("It's not that I can't cook. I don't cook."), it's the hilarious, all-too-true story of what it means to be a wife—with a real-life husband, one television remote, and the sneaking suspicion that he's using your very, very expensive, very, very hard-to-find shampoo.

"SO HILARIOUS & SO TRUE!!!" 2007-07-10
By Kristine Gordon (Los Angeles, CA)

 "why get married?" 2006-07-14

I am just starting out as a model and I had so many questions. Is modeling for you? was the perfect find. It gave me insight into the modeling business and helped me to understand the steps that are necessary to succeed. I feel much more conffident now that I have read this book. Every aspiring model should read it.

The fact that the majority of today's sucessful black models started at black agencies, and there's a listing of them in this book. It was helpful, but if you're already established as a model, it may seem redundant.
