A big, brash history of Guns n’ Roses charismatic, talented and idiosyncratic leader

“An archetypal rock biography that captures the runaway-train spirit of the singer and his band—You don’t have to be a Guns N’ Roses fanatic to dig this energetic, comprehensive, few-holds-barred portrait of modern metal’s most charismatic figure.”—Kirkus Reviews

Even in the rock world, a figure like Axl Rose doesn’t come along very often.  Mercurial and brilliant, deluded and imperious, Rose defies easy description.  W.A.R. reveals Rose’s childhood influences (and how he got his name), tracks the birth of G n’ R and delves into the stories behind their monster albums Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion.  But with those successes came excesses—drugs, infighting and a lead singer who morphed from eccentric to seemingly unhinged.

Journalist Mick Wall had unprecedented access to Rose and G n’ R during their heyday and gives a more richly detailed portrait of the band than you’ve ever read before.  W.A.R. has fresh views on:

--the death of two fans at the Donington Park concert in England

--Rose’s fallout with all the other original G n’ R band members, including Slash

--fights with Kurt Cobain, Vince Neil and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger

--Rose’s no-shows at concerts throughout his career

--the lead singer’s becoming a recluse at his Malibu mansion for most of the last fifteen years

--the much-gossiped-about and long-awaited album Chinese Democracy

 "And the winner is.....Buckethead!" 2009-02-02
By William Kalal (Strangebend, NY)
OK this is an amalgam of every scrap of tabloid gossip ever put together about the band continuing to generate controversey twenty years later. rehashed, hack-writing, second hand story telling, but still fun to read. Get the slash book first if you haven't though.

Who would of thunk that of Axl and Buckethead, Buckethead would have been the more business-like person. Sick of no-shows, riots, and four hour stage delays... Mr.Buckethead leaves, for much less money doing his own gigs.

 "Forget Watch You Bleed" 2009-01-29
By Nick Coxon (Dublin)
Forget Watch You Bleed or any of the other so-called insightful books about Axl and GNR, Mick Wall is the only one I've read by anybody that actually knew the singer and the band. I've been a huge Guns fans since 87 and thought I knew it all - but I really didn't. I'm amazed at all the other reviews on this page saying there's nothing new in it. They must be written by nerds who spend their lives on GNR chat rooms cos this book is full of stuff I'd NEVER heard before. Brilliantly written too, in that classic style you just do't get here in the US. No, Axl don't come out of it smelling of roses, but he sure comes out packing his guns. And so does Mick Wall. A great book, one of the best of its kind I've ever read. Don't be fooled by the fools who don't want you to know the truth - get it!!

 "Get in the Ring" 2008-07-17
By N. Kain
This book is a joke. it has to be, because there is no way that the author could have an unbiased opinion. all you really need to do to know the quality of this book is listen to axl's rant in the GN'R song "Get in the Ring"

 "Research is poor..." 2008-04-23
By Driver8 (Los Angeles)
I was browsing through this book yesterday and read the section of the book where the author talks about the recording of "Sympathy for the Devil." This song was recorded at Rumbo Recorders -- I used to work there and was present during these sessions. The author does not mention Rumbo, and has these sessions taking place at another studio. To me, this would be an easy thing to verify.
